Common Mistakes That Damage Your Gums

Most people brush twice a day — but many unknowingly cause more harm than good.

Brushing Too Hard Your gums are delicate tissue, and aggressive brushing wears away enamel and causes gum recession.

Use a soft-bristle brush with gentle, circular motions.

Using the Wrong Technique Hold your brush at a 45-degree angle to your gums and use small, circular strokes — cleaning two or three teeth at a time.

Not Brushing Long Enough Two minutes is the minimum.

Most people stop after 45 seconds. Set a timer or use an electric toothbrush with a built-in timer.

Forgetting Your Gum Line Plaque builds up where teeth meet gums. Angle your brush toward the gum line and clean gently on every pass.

Skipping Your Tongue Your tongue harbors bacteria that cause bad breath. Use your brush or a tongue scraper every time.

Replacing Your Brush Too Late Replace your toothbrush every 3 months. Worn bristles clean far less effectively.
